  • Combine Dry Ingredients: In a large saucepan, mix sugar, cocoa, cornstarch, and salt.
  • Add Milk: Gradually stir in milk until the mixture is smooth.
  • Cook the Mixture: Bring to a medium heat, stirring constantly, until it thickens and boils. Keep stirring for 2 more minutes.
  • Temper Eggs: Take a small amount of the hot mixture and gradually mix it into the beaten egg yolks. Then, slowly add the tempered yolks back into the saucepan, stirring continuously.
  • Boil Again: Return the mixture to a gentle boil and keep stirring for another 2 minutes. Remove from heat.
  • Add Butter and Vanilla: Stir in butter and vanilla until the mixture is smooth.
  • Chill: Pour the filling into the pre-baked crust. Cover with plastic wrap directly on the surface and refrigerate for at least 4 hours.
  • Prepare Topping: Whip the heavy cream with powdered sugar and vanilla until stiff peaks form. Spread or pipe over the chilled pie before serving.
