Ingredients

  • Ingredients:
  • Before you get started make sure you have these essentials in your kitchen:
  • 1 14 oz can sweetened condensed milk
  • 4 cups hot water
  • 6 eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Nutmeg for garnish

Instructions

  • Directions:
  • Step 1: Preheat the Oven
  • Start by preheating your oven to 325°F (163°C). While it’s warming up, let’s move on to the next steps.
  • Step 2: Prepare the Custard Mixture
  • In a large glass or metal bowl, combine the sweetened condensed milk and hot water. Give it a good stir until well mixed.
  • In a separate bowl, beat the eggs until they turn light in color and have a fluffy texture. This step is crucial for achieving that creamy custard consistency.
  • To avoid shocking the eggs, gradually pour a bit of the hot milk mixture into them, whisking continuously. This process is called tempering and prevents the eggs from cooking too quickly.
  • Once you’ve tempered the eggs, you can combine them fully with the milk mixture.
  • Add the vanilla extract and a pinch of salt to the mixture, stirring well to infuse those beautiful flavors.
  • Step 3: Prepare for Baking
  • Now, it’s time to prepare your baking vessel. You have two options: either use individual ramekins or a 2-quart baking dish. Both work wonderfully.
  • Place your chosen baking container on a larger baking pan with high sides. This will be useful for the next step.
  • Carefully pour the custard mixture into the ramekins or the baking dish. Fill them up, leaving some space at the top.
  • Step 4: Bake to Perfection
  • To create the right baking environment for your custard, pour about half an inch of water into the larger baking pan. This water bath method ensures the custard bakes gently, resulting in that velvety texture we all love.
  • Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for about 1 hour. Your custard is ready when a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
  • If you’re using the larger baking dish, it may take about 1 hour and 40 minutes to achieve that perfect consistency.
  • Step 5: Cool and Garnish
  • Once the custard is done, remove it from the oven and allow it to cool for about an hour. Cooling time is essential for the custard to set properly.
  • After it has cooled, sprinkle a touch of nutmeg on top for a delightful, aromatic finish.
  • Step 6: Serve and Store
  • You can serve the custard warm or refrigerate it to enjoy it chilled. Either way, it’s a treat for your taste buds.
  • To store leftovers, cover the custard with plastic wrap or foil and refrigerate. It should stay good for a couple of days.
